Hauppauge High School + Middle School Athletic Facilities

In 2023, the Hauppauge Union Free School District held a bond referendum for a major, district-wide capital improvement program focused on revitalizing instructional spaces, athletic facilities, and infrastructure. The $58.2 million initiative was overwhelmingly approved including significant improvements to the High School’s athletic facilities – resurfacing of the track and field event areas, construction of two multi-purpose synthetic turf fields, reconstruction and expansion of the tennis facilities with dedicated pickleball courts, construction of a dek hockey rink, additional parking, ADA accessibility improvements, and upgrades to the pool filtration systems.

As part of the planning process, the BBS Landscape & Site Design Group developed the 2023 Athletic Facility Master Plan, establishing a phased approach to improvements throughout the District’s athletic facilities and providing enhanced opportunities for student-athletes and the Hauppauge community.

High School North Athletic Complex:

The High School North Athletic Complex was transformed with the development of a state-of-the-art multi-purpose synthetic turf field complex featuring two 360′ x 200′ fields. The improvements included new grandstands, perimeter fencing, netting, a southern retaining wall, scoreboards, sports lighting, and security lighting. The tennis facilities were reconstructed to include eight tennis courts and four dedicated pickleball courts, along with perimeter fencing, a southern retaining wall, and dedicated sports lighting. Additional improvements included enhancements to the natural grass practice field, sports lighting and perimeter fencing, and a new pedestrian crosswalk for safer site access. The complex also received a new synthetic turf softball infield, ADA-compliant access, a comfort station with patio, spectator seating, enclosed dugouts, batting cages, and landscaped areas.

High School South Athletic Complex:

Improvements at the High School South Athletic Complex included a new synthetic turf baseball infield, along with upgraded irrigation and drainage systems, a new backstop, enclosed dugouts, perimeter fencing, spectator seating, and batting cages. Track and field improvements included resurfacing the perimeter track and jump event areas, relocating the shot put and discus events, and replacing the scoreboard. The home and visitor grandstands and home press box were also replaced, with additional storage space provided below. Other site improvements included a new patio and viewing plaza overlooking the track and field, complete with seating, tables, landscaping, and a new comfort station/storage building. A dedicated “Wall of Heroes” memorial area was also created. Additional improvements included reconstruction of the youth field clay infield, expanded practice field areas, a new 175′ x 75′ dek hockey rink with dasher boards and player/scorer boxes, expanded parking with security booths and gated access, ADA-accessible pathways, and a reconstructed courtyard.

Middle School Athletic Complex:

The Middle School Athletic Complex was improved with new entrance and site circulation features designed to align the middle school entrance with the high school entrance and provide safer vehicle and pedestrian access. The project also included a new outdoor classroom with a comfort station, benches, tables, shade structure, and landscaping. Athletic improvements included renovations to the baseball and softball fields, including infield restoration, new backstops, enclosed dugouts, fencing, concrete pads, and batting cages. Three new multi-purpose basketball courts were constructed with overlays for volleyball and handball, along with a handball wall and perimeter fencing. The track was repaved and restriped, and perimeter fencing and gates were replaced. Additional practice field space was improved, while new brick columns and an entry arch enhanced the overall appearance and accessibility of the complex.
