LIU Tilles Center Krasnoff Theater (Hillwood Recital Hall)

Located in the Tilles Center complex adjacent to the main Concert Hall, the Hillwood Recital Hall had not undergone any major renovations since its original construction over (40) years ago. Prized for the intimacy and warmth for both performers and audience members, LIU retained BBS to assist with the reconfiguration of the outdated 508-seat Recital Hall with a primary goal of preserving its “intimate ambiance” while maximizing its utilization and flexibility for University events.

Developed in a committee-like setting, the primary project scope focused on completely re-configuring front-of-house floor elevations in the theater. This design effort required a full removal and replacement of all seats, regrading floors for better views and improved sound distribution, new carpeting, acoustic tiles, ceiling baffles, stairs, artwork, doors, and various interior partitions.

Due to its off-center, asymmetrical arrangement, the existing theater was re-aligned within the existing walls, including the main stage area. The stage received all new framing, miscellaneous repairs, and a new Harlequin vinyl performance surface. A proscenium arch was added to frame the stage area. Other interior work included upgrades to A/V theatrical systems, new lighting layout and fixtures, air diffusers, removing one of (2) sound booths and expanding/renovating the other one on the 2nd floor mezzanine, and reconfiguring the existing lobby to allow for more seating in the theater.

At the 2018 opening ceremony, the former Hillwood Recital Hall was officially renamed to ‘Krasnoff Theater’.
