History
Formerly known as Burton Behrendt Smith, the origins of BBS date back to 1975 when it was founded as a professional corporation of surveyors and engineers. Over the years the firm was transformed into a nationally-recognized architectural, landscape architectural and engineering consulting practice. BBS today is one of the top educational facility designers in the Northeast.

Burton & Hand is established as a collaborative of engineers and surveyors.

Roger Smith graduates from NYIT School of Architecture Magna Cum Laude and Joins Burton & Hand full-time.
1985

Roger Smith joins as a partner & lead architect, and initiates the firm’s transformation & shift towards architecture. | Burton Hand Beherendt Smith, PC is formed. | The firm relocates to Patchogue’s Main Street.

BHBS starts working for New York State public educational clients.

Don Hand, the original founder, retires from the business. | Burton Behrendt Smith, PC is formed.

Phillips Associates join BBS team. | BBS is retained for its first bond referendum project (Patchogue-Medford UFSD).

BBS receives its first AIA ARCHI Award for Leeway School.

BBS is awarded a 2021 Emerging Professional Friendly Firm award by AIA. | BBS opens an office in Danbury, CT. | BBS Architects & Engineers, PC registers as a Professional Corporation in New Jersey. |
