The educational requirements for the new building addition at the Candlewood Middle School the Half Hollow Hills CSD include new science rooms; an auxiliary gym; 650-seat auditorium; main office; guidance office; nurse’s office; band-, orchestra-, chorus-, and general music spaces; music practice rooms; library; computer rooms; general purpose classrooms; and several technology classrooms. The site re-configuration yielded additional parking areas and a new bus loop and drop-off area.
The unique design by BBS provided a distinct point of entry into the Middle School building, with adjacencies to the administration offices, which also created a hinge point for the program interconnectivity. The new building addition was designed as a structural steel frame with masonry cavity walls, aluminum windows and skylights. The rotated entry “cube” and lobby skylights are self-supporting structural systems featuring state-of-the-art tinted reflective glazing.
