Elwood Schools 2017 Project – Phase 3 & Phase 4

Extending from the Summer of 2021 through the Summer of 2023, the Elwood Public Schools completed Phase 3 and Phase 4 projects of its 2017 Bond scope. This critical work, which included both building and site improvements district-wide, has brought significant upgrades to all Elwood schools , providing students with better learning environments and enhancing the overall safety and educational experience.

PHASE 3. Funded with approximately $11.10 million of the overall Bond budget, Phase 3 prioritized infrastructure improvements and interior alterations at both the John H. Glenn High School and the Elwood Middle School. It addressed aging building infrastructure as well as much-needed interior alterations and renovations, ensuring improved comfort and better learning experience.

John H. Glenn High School, Phase 3 Scope of Work:

  • Pipe Tunnel Abatement: Asbestos and other hazardous materials in the pipe tunnels were successfully removed, ensuring safe access by maintenance staff and outside contractors for future repairs.
  • VAT Replacements: VAT (Vinyl Asbestos Tile) was replaced, eliminating old and deteriorated asbestos-containing flooring materials, and providing a more modern and sustainable alternative.
  • Cafeteria Renovations: The cafeteria underwent improvements, including replacement of the ceiling and lighting, new wall finishes, new furniture, and enhanced aesthetics to create a more inviting and functional space for students and staff.
  • FACS Classroom Renovations: A Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) classroom was renovated, inclusive of new ceiling and lighting, flooring, wall finishes, casework, and new appliances providing students with an updated and well-equipped space for practical learning and skills development.
  • Auditorium Renovations: The high school auditorium underwent improvements to enhance its functionality and aesthetics, including new seating, audio-visual upgrades, LED lighting, etc.

Elwood Middle School, Phase 3 Scope of Work:

  • Cafeteria Renovations: Similar to the High School, cafeteria renovations included replacement of the ceiling and lighting, new wall finishes, new furniture, also floor repairs and improved mechanical systems, as well as enhanced aesthetics to create a more inviting and functional space for students and staff.
  • Auditorium Renovations: The auditorium underwent improvements to enhance its functionality and aesthetics, including new seating, audio-visual upgrades, LED lighting, stage curtain replacement, and stage floor refurbishment.
  • FACS Classroom Renovations: Renovations to Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) classrooms included new ceiling and lighting, flooring, wall finishes, casework, and new appliances which ensures that students had access to modern, well-equipped spaces for practical learning.
  • Music Suite Renovations: The music suite, comprised of a Band Room-Chorus Room-Music Library-Offices, was renovated including new ceiling and lighting, flooring, wall finishes, instrument storage, and improved acoustic features to create a better learning environment for music students.

James H. Boyd Intermediate School, Phase 3 Scope of Work:

  • Pipe tunnel abatement, VAT replacements, and kitchen flooring upgrades.

Harley Avenue Primary School, Phase 3 Scope of Work:

  • Cafetorium renovations, playground base and drainage improvements, and replacement of sidewalks/curbs.

PHASE 4. With a budget of $5.75 million, this phase focused on transforming more learning environments at the High School and Middle School. Classrooms now boast state-of-the-art technology, promoting interactive learning. Specialized areas for art, family/consumer, and science programs were also enhanced, nurturing creativity and STEAM education. The remaining athletic facility projects and site scopes were also completed as part of Phase 4.

John H. Glenn High School, Phase 4 Scope of Work:

  • Science Rooms Renovations: Science Labs 231 and 233 were successfully renovated to create modern and functional spaces for scientific exploration and learning.
  • Art Classroom Renovations: Art Classroom C underwent renovations to enhance the environment for artistic creativity and expression.
  • Robotics Lab/Wood Shop Renovations: The robotics lab and wood shop were renovated, providing students with updated and well-equipped spaces for hands-on learning and technical skills development.
  • Guidance Suite Renovations: The guidance suite was revamped to bring guidance counselors, the school psychologist, and the school social worker under one roof, to better serve students’ academic and counseling needs, while also creating a more welcoming and supportive environment.
  • Track Replacement & Football Field Improvements: The track was replaced, and improvements were made to the football field, inclusive of a new natural grass playing surface and enhanced drainage, ensuring safer and more accessible athletic facilities for students and the community.

Elwood Middle School, Phase 4 Scope of Work:

  • Art Rooms Renovations: Renovations to Art Rooms D and E enhanced the learning environment for budding artists, promoting creativity and artistic expression.
  • Boy’s & Girl’s Locker Room Renovations: Renovations to the locker rooms, showers, and support areas included ADA accessibility, enhanced educator supervision, and new lockers, which improved facilities for students’ Physical Education needs.
  • Parking Lot Reconstruction: The parking lot was repaved, ensuring better traffic flows at both the bus lane and the parent drop-off/pick-up area, improved overall site safety, and provided new parking options for parents, staff, and visitors.

These final phases of the 2017 Bond project mark a brighter future for Elwood schools, with upgraded facilities and modern learning spaces. The Elwood School District’s commitment to excellence and public support is evident in this significant achievement – it sets the stage for continued community growth and educational success.
