In 2023, the Hauppauge UFSD held a bond referendum on a major project intended to revitalize and improve instructional areas, athletic facilities, and the infrastructure district-wide. The $58.2 million initiative was overwhelmingly approved. The High School received majority of the approved spending in athletic updates including resurface of track and field event spaces, construction of two multi-purpose turf fields, reconstruction, and expansion of the tennis courts to include pickleball lines, construction of a dek hockey rink, additional parking, ADA accessibility improvements, and upgrade in pool filtration systems.
Developed by BBS Landscape & Site Design Group, the 2023 Athletic Facility Master Plan outlined a series of phased improvements to the district’s athletic facilities, enhancing opportunities for student-athletes and the entire Hauppauge community.
High School North Athletic Complex:
The High School North Athletic Complex improvements include the development of a state-of-the-art multi-purpose synthetic turf field complex, featuring two expansive fields measuring 360′ x 200′. The project also includes the installation of grandstands, perimeter fencing, netting, and a retaining wall on the southern end. To enhance the spectator and athlete experience, new scoreboards, sports lighting, and security lighting will be incorporated, ensuring the facility is well-lit and accessible for both daytime and evening events.
Additionally, the renovation scope encompasses the reconstruction of 8 tennis courts and 4 dedicated pickleball courts. These courts will be equipped with perimeter fencing, a retaining wall on the southern end, and dedicated sports lighting. The site will also see the enhancement of a natural grass practice field, the installation of sports lighting and perimeter fencing, and the addition of a pedestrian crosswalk for safer access. Other key features include a new synthetic turf softball infield, ADA-compliant access throughout, a comfort station with a patio, spectator seating, enclosed dugouts, batting cages, and landscaped areas for an improved overall environment.
High School South Athletic Complex:
The High School South Athletic Complex improvements encompass a series of upgrades designed to enhance both functionality and aesthetics. A key feature of the project is the installation of a synthetic turf baseball infield, alongside improvements to irrigation and drainage systems. Additional enhancements include a new backstop, enclosed dugouts, perimeter fencing, spectator seating, and batting cages. The project also focuses on track and field improvements, such as resurfacing the perimeter track and jump event areas, relocating the shot put and discus events, and replacing the scoreboard. Furthermore, the home and visitor grandstands, as well as the home press box, will be replaced, with additional storage space incorporated underneath.
Additional site enhancements include a new patio and viewing plaza overlooking the track and field, complete with benches, tables, landscaping, and a comfort station/storage building. A dedicated memorial area, known as the “Wall of Heroes,” will provide a meaningful space for reflection. Other improvements include a reconstructed clay infield for the youth field, expanded practice field space, a new deck hockey rink (175’ x 75’) with a dasher board system and player/scorer boxes, and an expanded parking area with security booths and gated access. The project also includes ADA-accessible pathways and a reconstructed courtyard to ensure inclusivity and ease of movement throughout the facility.
Middle School Athletic Complex:
The Middle School Athletic Complex improvements aim to enhance both athletic facilities and site accessibility. A major component of the project includes entrance improvements that align the middle school entrance with the high school entrance, incorporating new asphalt and concrete for better vehicle and pedestrian safety. The project will also introduce an outdoor classroom area featuring a new comfort station, benches, tables, a shade structure, and landscaping, creating a functional and inviting space for students and staff.
Key athletic upgrades include renovations to the baseball and softball fields, with infield restoration, new backstops, enclosed dugouts, fencing, concrete pads, and batting cages. The complex will also see the addition of three multi-purpose basketball courts with overlays for volleyball and handball, a handball wall, and perimeter fencing. Track and field improvements will involve repaving and striping the track, as well as replacing perimeter fencing and gates. Furthermore, additional practice field space will be enhanced, and brick columns with an entry arch will be installed to improve the overall aesthetics and accessibility of the complex.
