Scarsdale High School Auditorium Renovation

The renovation of the Scarsdale High School Auditorium marks the completion of a long-envisioned project to transform a dated facility into a modern, high-performance space for music, theater, and community use. Designed by BBS, the project reimagined the auditorium as a centerpiece for the arts – one that supports a full range of performances while enhancing comfort, accessibility, and acoustic performance.

Planning for the renovation extended over two decades, with the project ultimately approved during the 2023 Budget Vote. Construction commenced in the summer of 2024, beginning with the complete demolition of the original auditorium interiors. Given the building’s continuous use during the academic year, much of the construction work was scheduled during night shifts and school breaks to minimize disruption. The renovation encompassed substantial structural re-configuration, replacement of seating and finishes, and integration of new building systems to support modern performance and technical requirements.

A primary design objective was to improve acoustics and audience experience. The existing auditorium rectangular volume was reshaped into a funnel-like form to enhance sound projection and sound clarity, complemented by custom-designed, honeycomb-patterned acoustic wall panels that help distribute sound evenly throughout the space. The stage platform was expanded and rebuilt to allow for flexible production layouts, while new ADA-compliant ramps and permanent stairs improved accessibility and function.

Additional upgrades include new energy-efficient LED lighting, renovated rigging and catwalk, updated dressing rooms, and enhanced stage support spaces. Together, these improvements create a venue that not only meets the needs of current and future performing arts programs but also offers a flexible, sustainable, and community-oriented gathering space at the Scarsdale High School.
