Southampton Elementary School Addition

This project involved the renovation of the existing Southampton Elementary School including restoration of brick façades and replacement of all exterior windows and doors. It also included a brand new building addition in conjunction with re-thinking of the entire school campus. Faced with new site constraints, the school district ultimately decided to keep its elementary school at the site – near the historic Main Street of the famed Long Island town.

The architecture of the new building addition continues the vocabulary of the original building. A transitional element was introduced to mark the connection of new and old. Its architecture is more neutral and interpretive of the original detailing rather than literally representational.

School playing fields, driveways, and the playground equipment were all reconfigured to provide efficiency and student safety. A new elevator within the new building addition provides handicapped accessibility to all levels of both the existing building and new the new addition.
