We were engaged by the Town of Southampton to provide comprehensive architectural and engineering design services for the Westhampton Activity Center, to be located across four Town-owned parcels on Mill Road in Westhampton, NY. Our work began with a thorough site analysis, factoring in the regulatory limitations of each parcel. While 393 Mill Road allowed for unrestricted development, the remaining three parcels – 395, 397, and 399 Mill Road – were limited to recreational use only. These constraints guided the strategic siting of program elements, ensuring full compliance while maintaining connectivity and flow between civic and recreational functions.
In response to the Town’s programmatic goals, we developed multiple design alternatives, ultimately converging on a facility layout that integrated both recreational and civic spaces. Recreational amenities were housed in designated areas including an E-Sports room and Game Room, a Youth Flex Room, and a large open Flex Space with tables and chairs spanning over 3,000 SF across two connected zones. For non-recreational and civic functions, we designed a café and warming kitchen equipped with a reheat line and dishwashing facilities, multi-purpose meeting rooms, youth reading/ writing spaces, and designated staff support areas such as Manager Offices, Storage Rooms, a Mechanical/ Utility Room, and an EOC Room for emergency operations. The plan also included a covered outdoor area to promote year-round community engagement.
Our full scope included site survey, utility mark-outs, and subsurface soil analysis, followed by schematic design, cost estimating, and the development of final construction documents. We incorporated energy-efficient systems and infrastructure, and designed for resilience, accessibility, and operational flexibility. Comprehensive permitting, bid phase support, and construction administration services rounded out our commitment to delivering a civic and recreational facility that met the Town’s evolving needs. The resulting design for the Westhampton Activity Center offered a welcoming, multi-generational hub that reflects the community’s priorities for recreation, engagement, and public service.
