New pickleball courts open in East Rumbrook Park

In its 2022 $19.2 million capital budget, the Town of Greenburgh included funding for pickleball, which the Town Supervisor called “the fastest-growing sport in America that most people never heard of.

Pickleball is played with a paddle and a perforated plastic ball. It combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong and can be played either outside or indoors on a badminton-sized court and a modified tennis net. According to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, 4.8 million people now play the game, invented in 1965 by three middle-aged men on Bainbridge Island, WA.

Ready for the 2023 Town Summer Pickleball Clinic, BBS Site / Civil Design Group worked closely with the Town to plan and design (4) new pickleball courts at East Rumbrook Park in Hartsdale, NY. The new courts complement the Park’s existing platform tennis courts, which the Town only recently re-purposed for pickleball – due to the sport’s growing popularity with the Town residents. The project began in fall of 2022 and was completed during the the spring months of 2023. In addition to the (4) new pickleball courts the project included a new asphalt path/roadway, re-surfacing the existing basketball courts, various site upgrades, grading and drainage improvements, new fencing, landscaping, and other site improvements in the park.
