Port Jefferson Station, NY – The Comsewogue School District is proud to announce the completion of the Comsewogue High School courtyard renovation, transforming the heart of the high school into a vibrant and inclusive outdoor space for students and staff. The redesigned courtyard now features ADA-compliant access ramps, newly paved walkways, and the thoughtfully designed “Learning Circle” – a central gathering area to support outdoor instruction and collaborative learning.
This enclosed courtyard – previously limited by accessibility challenges and aging infrastructure – has been redesigned by BBS Landscape Architects to meet modern learning needs. The project introduced several multi-level seating areas with new outdoor tables and seats, sail shades in the school’s blue and gold, and perimeter landscaping. New planters and integrated handrails enhance both aesthetics and safety of the outdoor space, contributing to a more inviting atmosphere. Located adjacent to the school cafeteria, the renovated courtyard also gives students and faculty the opportunity to enjoy lunch outdoors.

Working within the constraints of a fully enclosed school site presented unique logistical challenges, requiring coordination of material delivery, staging, and phased construction to minimize disruption to the school’s daily operations. Despite tight working quarters and restricted access routes, BBS project team successfully delivered a functional, inspiring, and welcoming environment that reflects Comsewogue’s on-going commitment to student engagement and wellbeing.
