Port Jefferson, NY – As the Architect for the Port Jefferson Free Library Teen Center, BBS is proud to have played a key role in transforming the historic 1812 Bayles House into a vibrant, functional space dedicated to local teens. Our approach preserved the unique character of the original building while introducing sensitive upgrades to meet the needs of a modern youth center. Working closely with the Library Administration, we retained significant architectural elements such as the five original fireplaces, a beehive oven, wide-plank pine floors, and the iconic Dutch front door. The result is a seamless blend of historic charm and contemporary utility.

In addition to preserving the building’s heritage, we enhanced its functionality with several key modifications. A Greek Revival-style front porch was reconstructed, inspired by historic photographs provided by the Port Jefferson Historical Society. We incorporated accessibility improvements including a discreetly integrated wheelchair lift and widened doorways, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors. The Teen Center interiors now feature multiple program rooms, tech stations, and dedicated areas for reading, art, and games – giving teens in grades 6-12 a welcoming, flexible space to learn, connect, and grow right in the downtown Port Jefferson area.
