Patchogue, NY – Late September and October are ideal times for plant installation as the weather cools, soil temperatures remain consistent, and rainfall becomes more reliable, all which trigger plants to send their energy into root development for the coming spring.
Using the calendar as our key, a team of BBS volunteers undertook a long-anticipated project to renovate the underutilized garden bed on East Main Street in front of our Patchogue NY Headquarters. BBS sits at the eastern entrance into Patchogue Village, and what better way to say “Welcome” than with a seasonal flowering experience.
The final design is a four four-season garden incorporating native and pollinator plants to the greatest extent practical. Utilizing a mixture of flowering and evergreen shrubs, herbaceous perennials, spring and fall flowering bulbs and seasonal accent plants, the new garden will ensure that color and excitement is provided throughout the year for all to enjoy. A public art installation project is also planned for the space which will highlight local artisans and their works.
Check back next summer as we provide photographic updates of the establishment and transformation of our vision.

The volunteer planting team consisted of Senior Associate, John R. Longo, ASLA, team leader, and Nicky Cornacchiulo (Architecture), and Ricky Santos (Engineering). A special thanks to Lawrence Salvesen, Partner, for ensuring this project came to LIFE.
