Hempstead, NY – Construction is now well underway at Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School as the Hempstead Union Free School District’s $42.3 million modernization and expansion project moves into its next phase.
The latest work is bringing the project’s new two-story academic wing to life, with the building structure beginning to take shape and providing a first look at the scale of the District’s planned expansion. Crews are advancing the structural and site work that will ultimately create new, flexible learning environments designed to support collaboration, hands-on instruction, and student engagement.

The project will also include a new Cafeteria and Student Learning Exchange™, providing a dynamic space for dining, learning, and interaction. Renovations to the existing cafeteria will create a new media studio, while improvements to the site will include a new softball/soccer field and parking lot.

Approved by voters in 2022, the project represents a significant investment in the future of Hempstead students and will address long-standing space needs while transforming the middle school into a more modern, flexible learning environment. Construction is scheduled for completion in time for the 2027–28 academic year.
