A New Sound for Jerusalem Avenue School

North Bellmore, NY – The Nassau BOCES Jerusalem Avenue School Auditorium underwent a complete transformation, turning a 1953-era space into a modern, inclusive performance and assembly venue. The original auditorium – shown in the “Before” photos – featured a spline ceiling, asbestos VAT flooring, and severely outdated acoustics. BBS designed a full gut renovation of this space, allowing for a comprehensive reconstruction that introduced new ceiling acoustical clouds, updated flooring and curtains, new seating, and a fully upgraded sound system with a dedicated sound booth. The “After” photos below highlight our bright, contemporary re-design.

Because the Jerusalem Avenue School serves students with learning, behavioral, and developmental needs, special care was taken in the design of the sound system. Multiple speaker zones can be independently controlled, allowing sound levels to be adjusted for individuals who are more sensitive to noise. The renovation also includes ADA-compliant seating platforms located at both sides of the rear of the auditorium, along with a large ADA seating area in front of the sound booth; when not in use for seating, these platforms can double as additional lighting locations. The renewed auditorium was designed not only to serve the Jerusalem Avenue School, but also to support other Nassau BOCES programs and the broader community alike.
